About Adventures In Kung Fu

Kung Fu Plaza, which is the oldest and most authentic Chinese and Thai restaurant in Las Vegas, was originally opened in 1974 in Las Vegas before Americans learned Thai food was different from Chinese food. So Alan Wong's parents decided to name the restaurant "Kung Fu," which everybody knew from the hit television show starring David Carradine.

Kung Fu Plaza Imports Mekhong

Named after a major river that flows along the border of Thailand, Mekhong has become a source of pride for Thailand. The spirit is made from indigenous sugar canes, rice, herbs, and spices that give it a balanced sweet and spicy taste indicative of Thai drinks and food. In April, Alan Wong's father, Chain Wong, made a special arrangement to import Mekhong from International Beverage Holdings in New York.

General Manager Alan Wong shares how several visits by the Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya touched him personally. Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya had learned about Kung Fu Plaza while searching for the most authentic Thai restaurant in Las Vegas. Chumlee From Pawn Stars Visits Kung Fu

Posted by Alan Wong - Sept. 2010

Our most recent notable Las Vegas visitor was none other than Austin "Chumlee" Russell. Chumlee is what I like to call an accidental celebrity, and it could not have happened to a nicer guy with a very big appetite. He was made famous on the History Channel reality documentary series Pawn Stars, which has 5 million viewers and counting. The show is built around the daily activities of the Harrison family and their Las Vegas-based Gold And Silver Pawn Shop.

Kung Fu Plaza Wins Best Catering Award

Best Catering Kung Fu PlazaA few months ago, Kung Fu Plaza was nominated for a friendly online competition among area businesses called Crown In Town. Nominations are received the month prior to the competition, giving every business an opportunity to complete their profiles.

From a field of fourteen different restaurants that provide catering services, five were selected as finalists. Online voting continued for the remainder of the month until a winner was chosen.

"We were very surprised to be nominated, especially for the catering segment of our business," said Alan Wong, general manager of Kung Fu Plaza. "Most people know us for our dining, takeout, and delivery. Until recently, only our best customers knew about our catering division. We are very honored."

Finalists represented a diverse mix of cuisines, including Mediterranean, Mexican, Italian, and another Thai restaurant. The certificate reads "Crown In Town recognizes and honors businesses who embody the trust and reputation as set forth by the chamber of commerce." The hosts will also be contacting the local chamber of commerce.

Las Vegas Thai And Chinese Catering For Almost Four Decades

"Many people do not associate Asian food with catering because not every restaurant offers catering services," says Wong. "But when you think about it, we have 37 years of experience in food preparation and delivery along with a cuisine that is all about family."

In addition to providing a diverse and customizable menu, Kung Fu Plaza is known for its affordable boxed lunches, lunch catering, office catering, dinner catering, and conference catering. It also caters weddings, which Wong says often makes him smile.

"Some of our most memorable dishes are not on any menu," says Wong. "This can be especially touching when a bride or groom to be makes a special request to serve a dish one of their grandparents or honored family members would never expect to see in Las Vegas."

Wong said when he is contacted for such special events, family members are used to expecting the worst. They are always surprised when the Wong family graciously accepts the challenge.

"In Thailand, people assume a restaurant can excel at any style of cooking, Thai or Chinese. They do not expect the same in the United States," says Wong. "We do everything possible to meet their requests, making them proud to surprise an honored guest with their favorite dish."
