About Adventures In Kung Fu

Kung Fu Plaza, which is the oldest and most authentic Chinese and Thai restaurant in Las Vegas, was originally opened in 1974 in Las Vegas before Americans learned Thai food was different from Chinese food. So Alan Wong's parents decided to name the restaurant "Kung Fu," which everybody knew from the hit television show starring David Carradine.

Kung Fu Plaza Imports Mekhong

Named after a major river that flows along the border of Thailand, Mekhong has become a source of pride for Thailand. The spirit is made from indigenous sugar canes, rice, herbs, and spices that give it a balanced sweet and spicy taste indicative of Thai drinks and food. In April, Alan Wong's father, Chain Wong, made a special arrangement to import Mekhong from International Beverage Holdings in New York.

Chumlee From Pawn Stars Visits Kung Fu

Posted by Alan Wong - Sept. 2010

Our most recent notable Las Vegas visitor was none other than Austin "Chumlee" Russell. Chumlee is what I like to call an accidental celebrity, and it could not have happened to a nicer guy with a very big appetite. He was made famous on the History Channel reality documentary series Pawn Stars, which has 5 million viewers and counting. The show is built around the daily activities of the Harrison family and their Las Vegas-based Gold And Silver Pawn Shop.

Thanksgiving In Las Vegas, Thai Style

King VajiravudhThis year, Thanksgiving in America will fall on the same day as Vajiravudh Day in Thailand, which commemorates the passing of King Vajiravudh in 1925. He was the sixth monarch of Siam under the House of Chakri, ruling from 1910 until his death.

King Vajiravudh was especially important in Thailand because of his efforts to promote Siamese nationalism, move what is now Thailand toward democracy, and his contributions as one of Thailand's highly renowned artists and writers. We honor him as well as our Western traditions.

Thanksgiving In Las Vegas, Thai And Chinese Style.

While celebrating Thanksgiving is not an Asian custom, there are many places as far as Bangkok that have started to honor the American tradition because of what it represents. Both Thai and Chinese people have long held that gathering for a feast is a meaningful experience.

"With turkey being served at most other restaurants in Las Vegas, we will still serve guests traditional Thai and Chinese cuisines," said Alan Wong, general manager of Kung Fu Plaza. "One of our most popular dishes during Thanksgiving weekend is Kung Fu Plaza roast duck. However, we also have other roast duck specials, including whole roasted duck and barbecued duck."

Thai Roast DuckAccording to Wong, duck is often chosen because many Asians prefer dark meat to white meat. White meat tends to be too dry or tough to enjoy in many, but not all, Thai and Chinese dishes, he said.

"Serving Thai and Chinese food on Thanksgiving honors the holiday," says Wong. "When the Native Americans and Europeans shared their harvest, it was unique because two cultures had come together."

Most Thanksgiving celebrations are modeled after the feast that occurred at the site of Plymouth Plantation in Massachusetts in 1621. Similar celebrations may have also taken place in Canada (as early as 1578) and Florida (1565). It is generally a time to give thanks and express gratefulness among family and friends.

Since 1973, Kung Fu Plaza has been known as one of the most popular Las Vegas restaurants serving Thai Thanksgiving. In addition to offering a full menu, Kung Fu Plaza maintains its normal hours of operation, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Many other restaurants in Las Vegas close early.
