About Adventures In Kung Fu

Kung Fu Plaza, which is the oldest and most authentic Chinese and Thai restaurant in Las Vegas, was originally opened in 1974 in Las Vegas before Americans learned Thai food was different from Chinese food. So Alan Wong's parents decided to name the restaurant "Kung Fu," which everybody knew from the hit television show starring David Carradine.

Kung Fu Plaza Imports Mekhong

Named after a major river that flows along the border of Thailand, Mekhong has become a source of pride for Thailand. The spirit is made from indigenous sugar canes, rice, herbs, and spices that give it a balanced sweet and spicy taste indicative of Thai drinks and food. In April, Alan Wong's father, Chain Wong, made a special arrangement to import Mekhong from International Beverage Holdings in New York.

Chumlee From Pawn Stars Visits Kung Fu

Posted by Alan Wong - Sept. 2010

Our most recent notable Las Vegas visitor was none other than Austin "Chumlee" Russell. Chumlee is what I like to call an accidental celebrity, and it could not have happened to a nicer guy with a very big appetite. He was made famous on the History Channel reality documentary series Pawn Stars, which has 5 million viewers and counting. The show is built around the daily activities of the Harrison family and their Las Vegas-based Gold And Silver Pawn Shop.

Kung Fu Plaza Adds WiFi To The Menu

Free WiFi ThaiKung Fu Plaza might be the oldest and most authentic Chinese and Thai restaurant in Las Vegas, but it's also striving to take a step in the right direction. Starting last week, Kung Fu Plaza began offering free WiFi for patrons who enjoy keeping up with family and friends during lunch and dinner.

"We want to give something back to the new friends we're making on Facebook and Twitter," said Alan Wong, general manager of Kung Fu Plaza. "They can find the password to access Kung Fu Restaurant's Free WiFi on any network, any time."

The passwords will be changed every month or so. But patrons forgetting to check can always ask servers what the password might be. Wong says it is the least they can do to reward customers who have decided to make Thai part of their healthier lifestyle.

How Social Media Has Helped Make Good Great For Kung Fu.

"A few years ago, we would have never thought that social media could keep us connected with our customers," said Wong. "Previously, I would visit dozens of review sites to gain insight on how we could make things even better. Now, many of our friends just tell us online, direct."

Wong said that online reviews were what motivated him to him start experimenting with social media last year. The restaurant had become a 2010 and 2011 Talk of the Town Award recipient based on online reviews. Wong said that he convinced his parents that they could become part of the conversation rather than just read about it.

"I no longer think of customers as people who walk in the door like most restaurants do," said Wong. "I am connected to some of them all the time and a few have even become friends of mine. This gives the entire restaurant an ambiance of what the Thai culture is supposed to be about — families and friends who get together to share a meal."

Kung Fu Means 'To Work Harder' In Cantonese.

Thai Las VegasAlthough Wong is often too busy to write every post, he says he enjoys talking about some of the happenings behind the scenes. He especially enjoys writing about what it is like to meet celebrities, including Austin ‘Chumlee’ Russell from the reality series Pawn Stars. One day he hopes to host special Tweetups and Facebook gatherings at the restaurant.

"We're looking at other location-based networks too and are always open to ideas," said Wong. “'Kung Fu’, in Cantonese, means ‘to work harder' and I always keep that in mind every day. We want to make Kung Fu the most memorable Thai restaurant in Las Vegas."

Kung Fu Plaza has its complete Chinese and Thai menu on its website. In addition in-house dining at the restaurant, Kung Fu Plaza delivers anywhere within a three-mile radius. The delivery service includes almost every resort along the Las Vegas Strip. It is open daily from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m, offering guest dining, takeout, delivery, and catering.
