About Adventures In Kung Fu

Posted by Kung Fu Family - April 2010

Kung Fu Plaza, which is the oldest and most authentic Chinese and Thai restaurant in Las Vegas, was originally opened in 1974 in Las Vegas before Americans learned Thai food was different from Chinese food. So Alan Wong's parents decided to name the restaurant "Kung Fu," which everybody knew from the hit television show starring David Carradine.

Kung Fu Plaza Imports Mekhong

Posted by Kung Fu Family - May 2010

Named after a major river that flows along the border of Thailand, Mekhong has become a source of pride for Thailand. The spirit is made from indigenous sugar canes, rice, herbs, and spices that give it a balanced sweet and spicy taste indicative of Thai drinks and food. In April, Alan Wong's father, Chain Wong, made a special arrangement to import Mekhong from International Beverage Holdings in New York.

General Manager Alan Wong shares how several visits by the Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya touched him personally. Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya had learned about Kung Fu Plaza while searching for the most authentic Thai restaurant in Las Vegas. Many Thai people consider Kung Fu Plaza even more authentic than modern cuisine served in Thailand.

Chumlee From Pawn Stars Visits Kung Fu

Posted by Alan Wong - Sept. 2010

Our most recent notable Las Vegas visitor was none other than Austin "Chumlee" Russell. Chumlee is what I like to call an accidental celebrity, and it could not have happened to a nicer guy with a very big appetite. He was made famous on the History Channel reality documentary series Pawn Stars, which has 5 million viewers and counting. The show is built around the daily activities of the Harrison family and their Las Vegas-based Gold And Silver Pawn Shop.

Kung Fu Plaza Wins Customer Satisfaction Award

Posted by Alan Wong On 8:00 AM
Kung Fu PlazaFor the second year in a row, Kung Fu Plaza earned an award of excellence in customer satisfaction as a Talk of the Town Award recipient. The category was top restaurants from Celebration Media, U.S. (CMUS). And I wanted to personally thank all of our customers.

Thank you for honoring us again this year. If you did not take the time to leave comments on review sites, we would have never been selected for this recognition. Just some of the sites Talk Of The Town includes: Yelp, Insider Pages, Angie's List, Google Maps, Google Places, City Search, Yahoo Local, Merchant Circle, Judy's Book, Respond, and Enetez.

I've found the reviews enlightening, on the review sites as well as comments on Facebook and Twitter. And while these social networks are not tracked by Talk Of The Town, it still gives us the chance to have a direct conversation with our customers. Sometimes I or one of our staff members will respond to a review, compliment, or even a complaint.

For example, one reviewer recently mentioned that there were not enough wontons in our "wonton mein" noodle soup (because we use so many noodles, which is the way our regulars prefer it). We responded to the review, offering that she could customize the soup on the next visit. It would be easy enough to do. Everything we make at Kung Fu Plaza is made from scratch.

Special orders do take some extra effort on our part, but that is the way things are here. Kung Fu means to try harder, and my family and I, along with our staff, will continue to try harder every day. We truly want to make our restaurant feel like a neighborhood favorite at the front door of Chinatown in Las Vegas. We strive for Thai and Chinese food to be thought of as an everyday meal and not just for special occasions. Based on the reviews, it seems we are getting better at it.

• "One of our favorite places to eat in Las Vegas, hands down. It's bit of a drive from where we live, but worth the trip every time. I haven't ordered a dish here that I didn't like." — Tracy T., Yelp

• "I go here almost once a month, it is right down the street from my house. I have never been disappointed with my meal here." — Sarah T., Insider Pages

• "Portions here are HUGE. Thom Ka Gai is amazing like at most Thai places, but they can make it extra spicy here and by extra spicy I mean burning your throat-crying spicy. Pad Thai is decent. Good for the price." — Amanda Dye, Urban Spoon

• "The Best Orange Chicken I ever had. If you don't need to be pampered, but want only good food, then this is the place to go." — Rouge Roj, CitySearch

Receiving This Award Was A Great Way To Commemorate The Year.

Things have really changed for us over the last year. Although Kung Fu Plaza has been in Las Vegas for 38 years, our experimentation with social media makes me feel even closer to our customers than ever before.

Talk Of The Town WinnerSince last year, twice as many people rated Kung Fu Plaza on review sites than in its entire history. It was featured in a favorable review by the Las Vegas Review-Journal and KLAS-TV Channel 8. It was visited by celebrities and dignitaries from as far away as Thailand. And nowadays, we even offer free WiFi for customers who dine in with us. Our check-ins on Facebook and Foursquare have grown from a few dozen people every month to more than 400 patrons.

We are honored and humbled. If the sign of a great restaurant is based on the generosity of its customers, then we must have the most generous Thai and Chinese food lovers in Las Vegas, both among those who visit Las Vegas as a guest and, of course, the many people who live here like we do. Thank you, my friends.
