About Adventures In Kung Fu

Posted by Kung Fu Family - April 2010

Kung Fu Plaza, which is the oldest and most authentic Chinese and Thai restaurant in Las Vegas, was originally opened in 1974 in Las Vegas before Americans learned Thai food was different from Chinese food. So Alan Wong's parents decided to name the restaurant "Kung Fu," which everybody knew from the hit television show starring David Carradine.

Kung Fu Plaza Imports Mekhong

Named after a major river that flows along the border of Thailand, Mekhong has become a source of pride for Thailand. The spirit is made from indigenous sugar canes, rice, herbs, and spices that give it a balanced sweet and spicy taste indicative of Thai drinks and food. In April, Alan Wong's father, Chain Wong, made a special arrangement to import Mekhong from International Beverage Holdings in New York.

Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya had learned about Kung Fu Plaza while searching for the most authentic Thai restaurant in Las Vegas. Many Thai people consider Kung Fu Plaza even more authentic than modern cuisine served in Thailand.

Chumlee From Pawn Stars Visits Kung Fu

Posted by Alan Wong - Sept. 2010

Our most recent notable Las Vegas visitor was none other than Austin "Chumlee" Russell. Chumlee is what I like to call an accidental celebrity, and it could not have happened to a nicer guy with a very big appetite. He was made famous on the History Channel reality documentary series Pawn Stars, which has 5 million viewers and counting. The show is built around the daily activities of the Harrison family and their Las Vegas-based Gold And Silver Pawn Shop.

As many people know, Adventures In Kung Fu covers more than our restaurant. It covers interesting news related to Thai cuisine and Chinese food. Sometimes we add in some interesting articles about Asian culture and fun things to do and see in Las Vegas, especially around the holidays.

Adventures In Kung Fu is an invitation to all things Thai.

Adventures In Kung Fu has been a real joy for me and my family, especially because we have gotten to know many Las Vegas visitors before and after they visit as well as our regular patrons who live right here in the city. This has been a project that has inspired us to bridge the new world with the old world of authentic Thai food.

Since we tarted, we have watched our Facebook check-ins climb from 60 people per month to almost 350 per month. We have seen our Twitter page grow from 0 to 350. And even this blog has grown from a few dozen people to several thousand, many of them feed subscribers .

It might not be huge like major companies who have whole teams of people who do nothing else, but the rewards have been worth it. We have become a 2010 and 2011 Talk of the Town Award recipient based on online reviews. We have had several foodies and reviewers try us for the first time because they found us on the Internet. And I have had the distinct pleasure of connecting with some customers on my personal Facebook account.

I cannot thank you all enough. My family and all our extended family members are grateful.

Kung Fu Means 'To Work Harder' In Cantonese.

There are so many great things happening for the Thai culture today that sometimes it is difficult to know what might be the best subject to cover. For example, I am very excited that Thailand is exporting more fruit, including specialty produce that are a still mystery in the West like mangosteens and rambutans. There are new efforts to introduce children to healthy foods. And there are new books encouraging people to try more diverse Thai food.

Las Vegas WiFiAll of it marks one of the reasons my parents named the restaurant 'Kung Fu’, which in Cantonese means ‘to work harder.' And we will continue to work harder with for you both in our restaurant and in finding great stories to share with you about our restaurant and about all things Thai and Asian.

Thank you again. We look forward to seeing you inside our Las Vegas restaurant or, since we deliver anywhere within a three-mile radius (which includes all of the Las Vegas Strip), taking your order on the phone. Kung Fu Plaza is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m, and still offers guest dining, takeout, delivery, and catering. Have a great week!
